Ranji Trophy, Round 5, Day 1: Virender Sehwag turns back the clock


Virender Sehwag struck a typically brutal hundred to lift Delhi. 
Virender Sehwag struck a marvelous unbeaten 147 on a green-top in Rohtak after Delhi were reduced to 41/4 by Haryana's new-ball bowlers. Meanwhile, Mumbai captain Suryakumar Yadav scored a quick-fire hundred as the 40-time Ranji champions put up 375 in a day's play. Elsewhere, there were five-wicket hauls for HP medium pacer, Rishi Dhawan, and Hyderabad seamer, Anwar Ahmed. Defending champions, Karnataka started positively to make four out of four as the Vinay Kumar-led side bowled out J&K for 160.

Group A

Karnataka vs Jammu and Kashmir, Hubli
The defending Ranji champions, Karnataka, enjoyed another fruitful day at the office after their bowlers, headed by captain Vinay Kumar, bowled out J&K for a paltry 160 on Day 1. Skipper, Vinay picked up four and Stuart Binny took three as the visitors, save Parvez Rasool, surrendered meekly in 52.1 overs. In response, J&K medium-pacer Mohammed Mudhasir picked up three wickets to reduce the hosts to 83-5 before an unbeaten 40-run sixth stand between Robin Uthappa and CM Gautam steadied the seven-time champions. Karnataka need 38 more runs to take the crucial first innings lead.

Bengal vs Tamil Nadu, Kolkata
After winning the toss on a chilly Kolkata morning, Bengal captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla inserted Tamil Nadu side in. The visitors, led by captain Dinesh Karthik's fine 92 ended the first day's play on 208/5. Karthik fell eight short of a deserved century but added 105-runs for the fourth wicket with Ramaswamy Prasanna to help Tamil Nadu recover from aprecarious 91/4. Seamer, Ashok Dinda with 3/68 was the pick of the Bengal bowlers.

Mumbai vs Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai
Mumbai captain, Suryakumar Yadav, struck a scintillating 135 off 145 deliveries as the hosts, after being asked to bat, piled on 375 runs for the loss of four wickets. Yadav was ably supported by opener, Akhil Herwadkar who was stumped three short of his century. Siddhesh Lad and Sarfaraz Khan had added an unbeaten 42-run stand for the fifth wicket at close of play on Day 1.

Uttar Pradesh vs Baroda, Lucknow
Visitors, Baroda reached a strong 316/6 at stumps on Day 1 largely due to Kedhar Devdhar's sparkling 146. Devdhar was ably supported by half-centuries from Saurabh Wakaskar and Aditya Waghmode as Baroda enjoyed 100+ stands for the first two wickets. Leg spinner, Piyush Chawla picked up three wickets, including that of the centurion, late in the evening to give UP a chance of wrapping the Baroda first innings early on Day 2.

Group B

Haryana vs Delhi, Rohtak
Virender Sehwag turned back the clock to score a scintillating unbeaten century on a green-top at Lahli even as the rest of the Delhi top-order crumbled to reduce them to 41/4. Sehwag compiled his 41st First Class hundred, his second in successive matches this season, and in the company of Rajat Bhatia stitched a 186-run stand as Delhi fought their way to end the day at 278/7. Hosts, Haryana, used as many as eight bowlers with Joginder Sharma emerging as most successful with figures of 3/39.

Rajasthan vs Punjab, Jaipur
Siddharth Kaul and Sandeep Sharma bowled probing lengths to reduce Rajasthan to 23/2 after winning the toss. However, after the initial burst it turned out to be tough day in the office for Punjab bowlers as the hosts, riding on Pranay Sharma's unbeaten century and fifties from Ashok Menaria and Rajesh Bishnoi ended the day strongly on 295/4.

Saurashtra vs Maharashtra, Rajkot
After winning the toss and electing to bat on a flat Rajkot wicket, Maharashtra ended Day 1 on 320/6. Harshad Khadiwale, Rohit Motwani scored composed fifties but couldn't build on to score a hundred. Ankit Bawne got to his half-century late in the day and along with Shrikant Munde will be expected to stretch the visitors' first innings. Off-spinner, Kamlesh Makvana picked up three wickets for the hosts.

There was no play on Day 1 in the Odisha-Vidarbha game due to inclement weather conditions.

Group C

Andhra vs Jharkhand, Vizianagaram
After a 77-run opening stand, visitors Jharkhand struggled to put together another substantial stand and collapsed to 215/9 at stumps on Day 1. Prakash Munda top-scored for Jharkhand with 67 even as the Andhra bowling attack kept chipping away wickets at regular intervals. Left-arm medium pacer Cheepurapalli Stephen was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts with 3/43.

Himachal Pradesh vs Kerala, Dharamsala
A Rishi Dhawan five-for broke the back of Kerala's batting order as the visitors were bowled out for 196 in their first innings in Dharamsala. Raiphi Gomez and Sanju Samson got starts but were dismissed by the guile of Dhawan. The hosts ended the day at 11/0 and stand a good chance to take the crucial first-innings lead in the Round 5 encounter.

Services vs Assam, Guwahati
Services won the toss and were reduced to 102/8 as Arup Das and Krishna Das took seven wickets among themselves on a day when inclement weather conditions permitted only 33.4 overs of play in Guwahati. Nakul Sharma top scored for Services with 32 as Services struggled to get any partnership going.

Tripura vs Hyderabad, Agartala
Hyderabad won the toss in Agartala and put the hosts in and had them reduced to 68/6 by the 23rd over. Fighting lower-order contributions from Kaushal Acharjee and Manisankar Murasingh saved Tripura the blushes as they limped their way to a first-innings score of 184. Left-arm medium pacer, Anwar Ahmed ended with a five-for. In response, Hyderabad raced to 116/1 riding on a fine unbeaten half-century by Ashish Reddy, Hyderabad require 69 more runs to take the first innings lead.
