Ranji Trophy Round 6, Day 2: Mukund ton gives TN huge lead


Abhinav Mukund's 140 helped Tamil Nadu take a big lead against Uttar Pradesh.
An Abhinav Mukund century helped Tamil Nadu build a huge first innings lead against Uttar Pradesh in Chennai. Meanwhile, Rujul Bhatt composed a patient 150 as Gujarat posted a mammoth 513/8 in their Group B encounter against Punjab in Ahmedabad. Elsewhere, Rajasthan and Maharasthra were involved in a cat and mouse battle in Pune, with the hosts sneaking a 4-run lead at stumps on Day 2.
Group A
Abhimanyu Mithun took the remaining three wickets of Madhya Pradesh's first innings as the hosts were bowled out for 303, having added 33 to their overnight score of 270/7. In response, Manish Pandey scored an unbeaten 92 to take the seven-time and defending champions, 90 shy of taking the crucial first innings lead. The visitors, who have recorded outright victories in each of their four games prior to this, ended the day at 214/3.

After bowling out the visiting Uttar Pradesh side for 182 on Day 1, Tamil Nadu moved further ahead in their sixth round fixture, on Day 2. Opener, Abhinav Mukund sizzled with a crunching hundred and the Baba brothers, Aprajith and Indrajith, scored fifties to give Tamil Nadu a healthy 178-run first innings lead at stumps. With Indrajith still at the crease, TN will look to stretch their lead past 200 before looking to bowl the visitors out.

Wriddhiman Saha added 37 runs to his overnight score of 129, and along with the lower-order, helped Bengal post a formidable first innings score of 387, before the bowlers struck at regular intervals to reduce J&K to 183/5 at stumps. For the visitors, only Ian Dev Singh, with 72 offered any resistance. A lot will depend on overnight batsmen SS Pundir and Bandeep Singh, who have already added 55 for the sixth wicket, for J&K to get the crucial first innings lead. They trail by 204.

On a day when only 12 overs were bowled, Railways successfully prized out the three remaining Baroda wickets, giving away only 27 runs in the process as Baroda folded for 298 in their first innings.

Group B

On a gloomy day in Delhi, 34 overs of play brought entertaining action when tailenders, Navdeep Saini and Varun Sood added 67 crucial runs for the 9th wicket to take Delhi's first innings score to 353. Overnight batsman Mithun Manhas fell 16-short of his century even as Basant Mohanty completed his five-wicket haul. In reply, Odisha were 25/1, trailing Delhi by 328.

Left-handed batsman, Rujul Bhatt, composed an assured 150 and with assistance from the lower-order, helped Gujarat post a formidable 513/8 decl. in their first innings against a resurgent Punjab side in Ahmedabad. Having bowled a mammoth 171 overs in the first innings, Punjab's openers did well to survive the seven overs they were asked to bat at the end of the second day's play. They will now have to bat out of their skin to get the crucial first innings lead.

Overnight unbeaten centurion, Puneet Yadav, was the last man dismissed as Rajasthan were bowled out for 270, having added only 21 runs to their overnight score. Their bowlers, however, fought doggedly to reduce Maharashtra to 124/6 before a 130-run seventh wicket stand between Chirag Khurana and Shrikant Mundhe took the hosts close to eclipsing Rajasthan's first innings score. Rajasthan still had a chance to snatch the lead when they had Maharashtra at 261/9 before Khurana shepherded the No. 11 batsman, Samad Fallah to take Maharashtra past 270.

After centuries from Ganesh Satish and Faiz Fazal had helped Vidarbha rack up 353 runs on the opening day, there were missed centuries for Subramaniam Badrinath, Ravi Jangid and Shrikant Wagh on the second day as Vidarbha declared at a mammoth 583/9. Then, in a 17-over burst before close of play, Shrikant Wagh removed two Saurashtra wickets to leave them looking up to India batsman, Cheteshwar Pujara for a miracle innings to bring them back into the game.

Group C

Inclement weather conditions in Dharamsala ensured no play on Day 2. Earlier on Day 1, Ankush Bains and Ankit Kalsi added an unbeaten 174-run second wicket partnership for hosts Himachal Pradesh to take them to 195/1 at stumps against Jharkhand.

Overnight batsmen, Dheeraj Jadhav and Tarjinder Singh completed assured half-centuries before a lower-order collapse ended Assam's first innings at 393. Aakash Bhandari with figures of 3/93 was the pick of the bowlers for hosts, Hyderabad. In response, openers, Akshath Reddy and Tanmay Agarwal batted solidly to ensure there were no jitters in the camp at the end of Day 2. Hyderabad require 359 more runs to take a crucial first innings lead.

On a day when inclement weather conditions permitted only 28 overs of play, overnight Goa batsmen, Darshan Misal and Saurabh Bandekar, both missed out on centuries before a lower-order collapse ended Goa's first innings for 304. Suraj Yadav picked up four wickets for Services. In response, Gauresh Gawas removed the Services openers in a five-over spell to leave them reeling at 28/2 at stumps on Day 2.

Duvvarapu Shivkumar added two more wickets to his seven in the first innings to leave Tripura tottering at 13/3 in their second innings after a Mohammad Kaif century had given the hosts, Andhra, a 159-run first innings lead. Andhra's lead would have been much bigger but for Manisankar Murasingh's five-for. Tripura now face an uphill struggle to save the game.
