Ranji Trophy, Round 1, Day 3: Yuvraj Singh smashes ton to put Punjab on top

Yuvraj Singh's 130 helped Punjab take control over Haryana. 
Yuvraj Singh's positive hundred at Patiala for Punjab against Haryana was the biggest highlight of Day 3 of Round 1 of the Ranji Trophy matches for the 2014-15 season. Walking in at 94/3 in the second innings, Yuvraj played his shots all around the park en route to completing his 21st first-class hundred. Eventually, after hitting 14 fours and 5 sixes, the left-hander was dismissed for 130. Here is a round up of Day 3 of various Ranji Trophy games held across the country.
Punjab vs Haryana, Patiala (Group B)
Punjab declared their second innings soon after Yuvraj's departure and immediately, opening bowler Sandeep Sharma wreaked havoc taking three early scalps. Mandeep Singh's Punjab is well on top of Haryana, who need 295 more runs to win.

Karnataka vs Tamil Nadu, Bangalore (Group A)
Sreenath Aravind finished with four wickets to help defending champions, Karnataka gain a slender 16-run lead over Tamil Nadu in Bangalore, after bowling out the visitors for 274. The hosts were off to a sensational start in their second essay, with openers Robin Uthappa and Mayank Agarwal sharing a fine 163-run stand. Tamil Nadu then managed to pick up four wickets for 70 runs. However, Karnataka are firmly in the driver's seat with a healthy lead.
Brief Scores: Karnataka 290, 247/4 (Mayank Agarwal 80, Robin Uthappa 76) lead Tamil Nadu 274 (Abhinav Mukund 84, Ramaswamy Prasanna 59; Sreenath Aravind 4/52) by 263 runs.
Assam vs Tripura, Guwahati (Group C)
Meanwhile in Guwahati, career-best figures of 7/50 for right-arm medium Krishna Das gave Assam an easy 10-wicket win with more than a day to spare. Tripura's last seven registered as many as 4 ducks to be bowled out for a paltry 155 in their second innings. Assam's openers then scored the 16 runs that were needed to take their side home.
Brief Scores: Assam 275 and 18/0 beat Tripura 135, 155 (Rakesh Solanki 40, Rajesh Banik 39; Krishna Das 7/50) by 10 wickets.
Mumbai vs Jammu & Kashmir, Mumbai (Group A)
Jammu & Kashmir (J & K) are running Ranji giants Mumbai close in their own backyard. With Mumbai tottering at 57/4, young Suryakumar Yadav bailed the side of trouble and scored a magnificent hundred to give them a fighting total in the second innings. Chasing 236, J & K made a steady start to close the day at 58/1.
Brief Scores: J & K 254, 58/1 (Shubham Kajuria 34* and Bandeep Singh 11*) need 178 more to beat Mumbai 236, 253 (Suryakumar Yadav 114; Ram Dayal 5/76, Umar Nazir 4/49).
Baroda vs Bengal, Vadodara (Group A)
Deepak Hooda made a fine hundred, but Ashok Dinda led the bowling attack picking three wickets as Bengal managed to take a handy 101-run first innings lead over hosts Baroda. In response, Bengal were placed at 8/1, with opener Arindam Das being dismissed very cheaply.
Brief Scores: Bengal 455 and 8/1 lead Baroda 354 (Deepak Hooda 114, Kedar Devdhar 87; Ashok Dinda 3/92, Laxmi Shukla 2/33) by 109 runs.
Delhi vs Saurashtra, Delhi (Group B)
A collective effort from the bowlers gave Delhi a big 225-run advantage in the first innings over visitors Saurashtra. Apart from Divyarah Chauhan, who scored a gritty 50, none of the Saurashtra batsmen made notable contributions. Sumit Narwal, Parwinder Awana and Rajat Bhatia bagged three wickets each. Delhi skipper Gautam Gambhir then enforced the follow-on, after which his bowlers had Saurashtra at 163/4 at stumps on Day 3.
Brief Scores: Saurashtra 217, 163/4 (Sheldon Jackson 36*, Aarpit Vasavada 33; Sumit Narwal 1/13) trail Delhi 442 by 62 runs.
Maharashtra vs Odisha, Pune (Group B)
2013-14 runners up Maharashtra rode on fifties from Harshad Khadiwale and Shrikant Mundhe to post a good first innings total. Although Deepak Behera bagged four wickets, Odisha couldn't prevent Maharashtra from taking a 60-run first innings lead. Odisha close Day 3 at 1/0 in their second innings.
Brief Scores: Odisha 311, 1/0 trail Maharashtra 371 (Harshad Khadiwale 83, Shrikant Mundhe 82*; Deepak Behera 4/82, Biplab Samantray 3/36) by 59 runs.
Kerala vs Goa, Wayanad (Group C)
Amit Verma completed a well-compiled hundred as Kerala made slow progress on Day 3 to finish at 299/6. The hosts could score just 239 runs across three sessions, for the loss of four wickets.
Brief Scores: Kerala 299/6 (Amit Verma 129, Nikhilesh Surendran 54*; Saurabh Bandekar 2/54, Shadab Jakati 2/52) trail Goa 367 by 68 runs.
Andhra vs Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam (Group C)
Despite a fighting hundred from opener Prasanth Kumar, Andhra conceded a 153-run first innings lead to Hyderabad, who then enforced the follow-on.
Brief Scores: Andhra 369 (Prasanth Kumar 124, Srikar Bharat 75; Syed Quadri 3/54, Ravi Kiran 3/103), 24/0 trail Hyderabad 522 by 129 runs.
Railways vs Madhya Pradesh, Delhi (Group A)
Railways lost three early wickets in the morning session to be bowled out for 280, which is 99 more than Madhya Pradesh's score in the first innings. Spirited fifties from Mohnish Mishra and Harpreet Singh then led a strong response from Madhya Pradesh in their second effort.
Brief Scores: Madhya Pradesh 212/5 (Mohnish Mishra 71, Harpreet Singh 69; Krishnakant Upadhyay 2/40) and 181 lead Railways 280 (Arindam Ghosh 120; Puneet Datey 5/86) by 113 runs.
Rajasthan vs Gujarat, Jaipur (Group B)
Ishwar Chaudhary led the bowling charts for Gujarat as they gained a 145-run first innings lead by bowling out the hosts for 195. In reply, Gujarat scored in excess of 4 runs per over and rode on Priyank Kirit Panchal's hundred to post a daunting 266/7 in the second innings. Chasing a mammoth 412 for victory, Rajasthan slumped to 34/3 three at stumps.
Brief Scores: Rajasthan 195, 34/3 (Ishwar Chaudhary 2/20) need 378 more to beat Gujarat 340, 266/7 (Priyank Kirit Panchal 110, Shailender Gehlot 4/50, Pankaj Singh 3/79).
A gritty contribution from Himachal Pradesh's lower-order saw them take a 263-run first innings lead. In reply, Services were placed precariously at 91/3 at stumps.
Brief Scores: Services 226, 91/3 (Soumik Chatterjee 27) trail Himachal Pradesh 479 (Nikhil Gangta 99, Ankush Bains 67, Vikramjeet Malik 59; Abhishek Sakuja 4/91, Suraj Yadav 3/101) by 162 runs.
