David Warner of Australia and Virat Kohli of India exchange words as umpire Ian Gould looks on.
Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan have been fined 30% of their match-fees for breaching the International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct during the fourth day's play of the first Test in Adelaide. David Warner was fined 15% of his match-fee.
The breach happened after David Warner was recalled by the on-field umpires after being bowled off a no-ball by Varun Aaron. Instead of taking his batting position, Warner walked towards the bowler and made a provocative comment. That sparked a heated exchange between Warner and Shikhar Dhawan, who entered the scene from his position at first slip and aggressively remonstrated with Warner. The umpires had to intervene to cool tempers. Kohli was fined
In a separate incident, Rohit Sharma and Steve Smith exchanged words after the former was alleged to have appealed for an incredulous Leg Before Wicket Decision. Kohli was pictured gesturing towards Smith asking him to 'stay within his limits'.
The three players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Jeff Crowe. As such, there was no need for a formal hearing," an ICC release said.
Following the incidents Crowe spoke with the two captains and reminded them of their responsibilities. "Both captains agreed that they will take the lead and the responsibility for setting the example. In particular, to stop any unacceptable aggression of any kind towards opposing players," Crowe said.
The three players were charged under Level 1 Article 2.1.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to conduct that either: (a) is contrary to the spirit of the game; or (b) brings the game into disrepute and carries a minimum penalty of an official reprimand a maximum of 50 per cent of a player's match fee.
